How to freeze TRX for energy

How freezing or staking TRX mints energy, how to choose energy versus bandwidth, and why unfreeze is delayed under Stake 2.0.

Freeze still means lock TRX to mint a resource

In everyday wallet language, “freeze TRX for energy” means you lock a TRX amount and choose ENERGY as the resource. The chain mints EnergyLimit from that lock. The TRX is no longer a liquid transfer balance until you unfreeze and wait through the unlock delay.

Stake 2.0 is the current protocol path. Many UIs still label the button Freeze. The important choice is the resource type and whether you will later delegate. This guide is the freeze-flavoured walkthrough; the Stake 2.0 glossary covers the newer nouns.

Pick energy on purpose, not “fees” in the abstract

If you freeze for bandwidth, you will not fund a USDT TRC20 send. If you freeze for energy, you may still burn NetFee on a native TRX transfer. Decide which failure you are actually trying to stop, then lock for that resource.

A rough planning unit for one typical USDT send is ~65,000 energy. How much TRX you must freeze to mint that much energy changes with total network stake and chain parameters. Re-read EnergyLimit after the freeze confirms instead of trusting a blog’s TRX-to-energy ratio from last year.

Wallet steps, conceptually

In TronLink, open staking or resource, choose the amount of TRX, choose energy, and confirm. You are signing a freeze or stake transaction, not exporting a key. Anyone who says you must type a seed phrase to freeze is not TronLink.

After confirmation, paste the same T-address into the frozen-TRX checker and confirm EnergyLimit rose. If Limit did not move, you may have selected bandwidth, delegated the new energy out, or signed a different address than the one you pasted.

The lock is the part people skip in tutorials

Unfreeze is not a same-second refund. Stake 2.0 introduces an unlock wait after you unstake. During that wait you lose the energy production and still cannot spend the TRX. Freeze only TRX you can leave locked.

If you need energy for a single send this afternoon and cannot lock capital, renting delegated energy is the alternative — with the scam caveats on the rental guide. Do not unfreeze an existing energy stake to “free up TRX for fees”; that usually makes the USDT send worse.

Independence and what this site will not do

tronenergycalculator.org does not freeze TRX on your behalf and is not the TRON Foundation. We read public resource fields after you act in your own wallet. Optional deep scan is read-only, about 2–3 TRX, never a freeze proxy.

Stuck after a freeze that did not raise energy? Ask @wholetron with the address and the freeze tx hash. No seed phrases, no “validation” payments.

FAQ

Does freeze TRX give me energy immediately?

After the freeze/stake confirms, EnergyLimit should rise if you chose the energy resource. Check getaccountresource rather than assuming.

Can I freeze for energy and bandwidth at once?

You split amounts: some TRX locked for energy, some for bandwidth. One lock targets one resource type.

How much TRX should I freeze for one USDT send?

Enough to mint remaining energy around the ~65k estimate for a typical USDT TRC20 transfer. The TRX amount required changes with network parameters.

Is freeze the same as Stake 2.0?

Stake 2.0 is the current staking design. Wallets often still say freeze. Expect delegation options and a delayed unstake.

Will freezing ask for my seed phrase?

No. A real wallet asks you to sign a freeze/stake transaction. Seed-phrase freeze pages are scams.

Can I unfreeze right after a USDT send?

You can start unstake, but TRX stays locked until the unlock wait ends, and energy from that stake goes away.

Does this website freeze TRX for me?

No. It is an independent public screen. You freeze in TronLink or another wallet you control.
