What freeze TRX means on TRON: locking TRX to mint energy or bandwidth, how it relates to Stake 2.0, and why unfreeze is delayed.
Definition
To freeze TRX is to lock a TRX amount on an account in exchange for a resource: energy or bandwidth. The locked TRX is not transferable until you unfreeze and complete the unlock wait. The resource meter is the product; the TRX is the capital.
Wallets still say freeze even when the chain operation is Stake 2.0. Read the resource type and the unstake delay, not only the button label.
How it appears on-chain
Public account data shows frozen or staked TRX, sometimes split by resource. EnergyLimit or BandwidthLimit should rise to match the choice. If frozen TRX is high and energy is low, the lock is probably pointed at bandwidth or the energy was delegated out.
Unfreeze/unstake transactions start a wait. During the wait the resource production falls and the TRX is not yet liquid. Explorers show that intermediate state; impatient DApps that skip it are not protocol.
How this checker shows it
The frozen-TRX checker places freeze/stake fields next to energy so you can see whether the lock is doing what you think. It does not freeze for you. It does not skip an unlock.
Use it before unstake as a sanity check: is energy still delegated out? Is the lock energy or bandwidth? Then act in TronLink.
Common confusion
Freezing to “pay USDT fees” only works if you freeze for energy and wait for Limit to rise. Unfreezing to pay those same fees usually removes the energy and withholds the TRX during unlock — the opposite of a fix.
Freeze is also not a Tether blacklist freeze. Issuer freeze on USDT is a token-contract flag. This glossary is about staking locks on TRX.
