A TRX burn for energy happens when a contract call needs more energy than EnergyLimit minus EnergyUsed, and the chain destroys TRX from the sender to purchase the missing compute. It is the expensive alternative to staking or renting energy.
A different burn, NetFee, purchases bandwidth when bytes are short. Naming which burn you hit is the difference between staking the right resource and repeating the loss.
How it appears on-chain
The transaction shows TRX leaving the sender without a matching TRX transfer to the USDT destination. Energy usage fields are populated. The USDT TRC20 transfer may have succeeded (you paid extra) or failed (you still paid something).
Retries create additional burns. That is why the out-of-energy problem page says stop clicking send until the prepaid meter is funded.
